Criminology Degrees

Criminology degrees are centered on the analysis and causes of crime and the control of crime. Criminology majors prepare individuals for an entry level position in the fields of law enforcement, youth counseling, substance abuse, corrections, probation, criminal investigations, social work and human services. Or if the student wishes, they can continue on with their education to gain a Masters in Criminology with such specialty study areas as forensics, computer crime investigation, law and social work. Criminology school differs from Criminal Justice school in that criminal justice degrees focus mainly on the criminal justice system itself, as apposed to criminology classes which teach a broader curriculum opening more opportunities into the field of Criminology occupations. Two types of Criminology areas are Criminologists, and Criminal Psychologists. Criminologists are students of crime and law. They theorize about delinquent and criminal behavior, analyze criminal law and criminal behavior system patterns. The most concentrated efforts of criminologists are in teaching and research. Sometime federal, state and local criminal justice agencies will involve a criminologist in evaluation and policy projects.

Criminal Psychologists are commonly mistaken for criminologists, however, criminal psychologists are a different scholastic route ending with profiling which is a study of behaviors, nature and patterns of a perpetrator under questioning.
